Men's College Basketball
N.C. Asheville at South Carolina
When: 8:00 PM ET, Wednesday, November 26, 2014
Where: Colonial Life Arena, Columbia, South Carolina

South Carolina played three games in four days last week, going 1-2 to finish fourth at the Charleston Classic, but coach Frank Martin was encouraged by what he saw. The Gamecocks return home to face UNC Asheville on Wednesday, and Martin told reporters after his team’s 68-63 loss to Akron on Sunday that his team is evolving. “We understand that we’re that close and we have some problems we need to fix,” Martin said. “If we fix them, we’ll be OK.”

South Carolina is 11 points away from being 5-0 instead of 2-3. The Gamecocks have outrebounded all five of their opponents, grabbing 21 offensive rebounds in the loss to Akron. Now South Carolina focuses on trying to slow down UNC Asheville’s Andrew Rowsey, who started the week fourth in the nation in scoring at 25.8 points per game.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, SEC Network

ABOUT UNC ASHEVILLE (2-2): Rowsey is a dynamic scorer who is 16-for-36 from 3-point range, reaching 20 points in every contest. He scored 29 as the Bulldogs shot 52 percent from the field in Saturday’s 98-87 loss to East Tennessee State. Freshman Kem Ubaru has won back-to-back Big South freshman of the week honors, averaging 14 points and five rebounds in two games last week.

ABOUT SOUTH CAROLINA (2-3): Sophomore guard Sindarius Thornwell averages 13.8 points for a Gamecocks squad that has scored fewer than 70 points in four of its first five contests, and has led South Carolina in scoring in three straight games. The Gamecocks have shot less than 40 percent in two of their past three games, an area that has to improve considering South Carolina only plays six more games between now and Jan. 3. The Gamecocks have been strong defensively, limiting opponents to 38 percent shooting.

1. Thornwell averaged 15.7 points in three games in the Charleston Classic.

2. South Carolina’s other close calls this season include a 69-65 loss to Baylor and a 65-63 defeat to UNC Charlotte.

3. The Gamecocks lead the all-time series 7-2.
