Men's College Basketball
Southern Methodist at Michigan
When: 12:00 PM ET, Saturday, December 20, 2014
Where: Crisler Center, Ann Arbor, Michigan

Michigan has dropped three consecutive games for the first time in almost four years and looks to snap out of its malaise when surging SMU visits on Saturday. The Wolverines face a veteran Mustangs’ squad on a five-game win streak after embarrassing home losses to NJIT and Eastern Michigan, followed by an 80-53 defeat at No. 3 Arizona last Saturday. “It’s a great reality check for everyone,” Michigan coach John Beilein told reporters. “We know that we have a lot of work to do.”

Two sophomores and a freshman are among the top four scorers for the Wolverines while SMU boasts seven seniors and is awaiting the possible return of 6-9 junior Markus Kennedy, who was ineligible the first semester. The Mustangs lost their only two road games against Indiana and Gonzaga while dropping a 78-72 decision to Arkansas at home. Coach Larry Brown’s team is outrebounding opponents by more than seven per game and shooting 48.8 percent from the field.

TV: Noon ET, ESPN2

ABOUT SMU (7-3): Nic Moore leads four players averaging in double figures at 14.5 points per game and is draining almost 50 percent of his 3-point attempts. Yanick Moreira contributes 12.3 points per game while leading the team in rebounding (6.8) and shooting 61.7 percent from the field – second in the American Athletic Conference. Keith Frazier (11.4 points) and Ben Moore (10.1) also average in double figures for the Mustangs, who hold opponents to 38.4 percent shooting.

ABOUT MICHIGAN (6-4): Beilein said he must have patience with this group, which has one of its top four scorers back from last season. Caris LeVert leads the team in scoring (16.7), rebounding (5.2), assists (3.9) and steals (2.1) while shooting 48.1 percent from 3-point range. LeVert, along with Zak Irvin (15.3) and Derrick Walton Jr. (11.6), account for 61.5 percent of the Wolverines’ scoring and the only other player scoring at least six points per game is 6-9 freshman Ricky Doyle (6.9).

1. Michigan PG Spike Albrecht is among the leaders in the nation in assist-to-turnover ratio at 4.22.

2. SMU G Ben Emelogu, who averaged 10.5 points as a freshman at Virginia Tech last season, has scored 33 in his first 10 games with the Mustangs.

3. The Wolverines were 50-4 on their home court – the Crisler Center – in the last four seasons until losing the last two.
